Look to start things off, I clearly have no idea If I'm using the wrong forums or not. I've been to about 25 forums in the last week, and I haven't got a reply worth reading. A lot of immature replies like, you're internet sucks. Anyways back to my problem I currently have a linksys WRT54GS, wireless. So we run on a shared connection, my desktop has a modem of course, but nobody really uses it. I have my own laptop, my sister has her own. We have never had any problems as for as lag spiking, and disconnecting from the internet goes. But ever since my brother got a laptop, every time he logs on the computer I get lag spiked. No, my sister does not, only me. But when he turns on the computer with his wifi off, nothing happens to me. I've noticed this problem only happens when he turns on his wifi. Therefore, when he does turn it on I get limited connection, and I simply have to click disconnect and connect. But it gets real frustrating, as my brother is in college. And I'm not going to get tempered by telling him to stop turning on his laptop. This is really annoying, especially because I get disconnected off games, and sometimes lose vital info. My questions are the following A) Can this be fixed, if so please let me know B) Why is this happening? C) Is there any programs that will fix the lag spiking as in pick up the lost packets. Like WLan optimizer works for xp but not vista, are there any compatible and working for Vista? Here are my computer specifications) Brand- Hp Pavillion Operating system- Windows Vista Ram - 2 GB Hard Drive- 250 GB I'm pretty sure you won't need anything else, and I don't even think you need this considering its a network problem, but hey. If more is needed let me know! As to any admins, if I am clearly going off topic on a wrong section, please tell me where to repost it. If this is the wrong forums, may someone please be kind enough to give me a proper forums in which my problem may or may not be resolved? Active forums is a plus. Your cooperation is highly appreciated in advance, Andrew ---------------------------------------------- The best don't recognize themselves as the best, but let others do it for them

Well....hmmm....interesting problem. I have the same router, so you're in luck. The first question is, how do you have the connection to the router set up? i.e. is the DSL (or cable) modem plugged into the back of the router, and your desktop connects to the router? Or...is the modem connected to your destop, and then shared to the other two computers via the wireless router? If it's the latter, and his is a newer laptop, it may be that his laptop "pulls" the signal in, and that may be causing the issue. Let me know on the above as to how it's set up. BTW, which laptop did your brother get? ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

Yes, the desktop is connected to the router.. My brother has a sony vaio. It is newer. And if it is pulling the signal in, is there anything I can do?

One thing to try is to set the router to transmit for just 802.11g. Not knowing which Sony he has, it may support 802.11n, which is a faster wireless protocol. Setting the router to transmit just 802.11n will set the transmission rate to a max of 54kps. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

You'll have to go into the router's setup menu - type 192.168.1.1 in IE or whatever browser you're using, type in the password, and then go to the Wireless tab. You'll see it under one of the sub menues. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate/Server 2008, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200
