My ThinkPad 765D, purchased when IBM discontinued it, came with Windows 95, which seriously limits its usefulness. It's been gathering dust. According the Active Networks listing, Windows is compatible with the 765D. Does that mean I can just run the installation disk and everything will be copacetic? I ask, because notebook hardware (10 years ago, anyway) tended to be proprietary and required special versions of the OS. What guarantee is there that the installation will be able to correctly operate the graphics, sound, PCMCIA slot, etc? (I don't care if the fancy -- for that era -- sound and video interfaces don't work.) Thanks in advance.

Win2000 Pro required a 133mz CPU and 256mb of RAM. A quick search indicated the ThinPad 765D came with a 166mz processor and 32mb of RAM. Unless yours is configured with enough RAM, Win2000 Pro probably won't install. Add on to that some of the drivers (primarily for the ethernet/NIC) may or may not be included on the Win2000 Pro disk. If you have enough RAM, it may work. If you can get a connection to the internet with the laptop, you might be able to run Windows Update for it to search for driver updates. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Server 2008 Enterprise, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200

After posting my inquiry, I found a 70-page document on the Lenovo/IBM Website that explained in excruciating detail how to install Windows 2000 on quite a number of ThinkPads. One of the limitations is that the 765D requires at least 64MB for proper operation, so I might have to start looking for compatible RAM. Thanks for your help.
