meandrake is what i call a "article tech", if it's not listed in an article he can read he won't know what to do.
First try safe mode. If it shuts down fine in safe mode it's probably hardware or 3rd party software (that black ice). If it doesn't shutdown in safe mode, you need a bios update or a 3rd party driver is conflicting. To find out how to do this follow this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q308514
If safe mode works, next go to start > run > msconfig, click ok. Click diagnostic startup, click ok, and restart. If the pc shuts down in regular mode now, narrow it down to what's causing it in msconfig.
If safe mode works but msconfig doesnt help, go into device manager and narrow it down.
Right click my computer > manage > double click device manager. Double click on modems, right click on everything under modems left click disable. Do the same thing for these catagories: network adapters, sound video game, unniversal serial bus. If it shuts down fine just narrow it down to which hardware is causing this.

meandrake i am shocked by your outburst against me, let's keep this professional.
My own personal view, is this forum is for helping people. If someone comes here and is lost and wants help, give them advice what to do. Telling someone to go to microsoft.com and "find some articles" is in my opinion not help, but blowing someone off. It's like if you bought a computer from compaq, you called compaq for help, and they just said "call microsoft for help", you wouldn't be too happy. If i dont know something, i dont post, or i say i dont know.
As far as ace13's issue is concerned, it sounds like hardware issues. If it doesn't shut down in safe mode, no 3rd party software is loaded or anything, just the bare minimum componants for windows to run. If it doesnt shut down here, you probably need a bios update.
The reason why you had to use ezbios is because your bios is outdated. You're better off just updating your bios. Also, xp doesnt like drive overlays, you might run into some problems with it. If a bios update doesn't fix it, check the hardware.

Forcing a hal probably wont fix this.
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q216573
To see your hal, right click my computer, left click manage, double click device manager, on the right side double click on COmputer. If it says standard pc your using apm. If it says advanced configuration... your using acpi. If your using apm the fix is to update the bios (youve done that), if your using acpi your fine.
To force a standard hal once setup starts, you press F5 to choose or F7 to force a standard hal, but this probably wont fix anything.
It's probably some piece of hardware stopping the pc from shutting down. Go back to device manager and disable devices. Disable everything under modems, network adapters, sound video game controllers, usb, and try to narrow it down.
