When I 'right click' on an mp3 within a folder (ie. to rename it),
everything closes down, my screen redraws and I end up
at my desktop. If I drag an mp3 out of a folder to the desktop,
I can use the right mouse click without this happening.
Any thoughts on what's going on here?
Thanks, much appreciated.
I should mention--this doesn't happen 100% of the time.

What other software, especially utilities (antivirus, etc) and software related to MP3 creation, etc. do you have installed? Also, is there anything that loads from the Start folder?

Using McAfee. Only Quickbooks Update Agent is in start-up folder:
For making mp3s: Direct Audio, Soundforge & RecordNow are installed,
but most mp3s I have are downloaded.
[I have another PC, same make and model running XT & the same software.
The same mp3s when used on the other computer do not cause this problem.]
In trying to right-click on a variety of mp3 files, I got these error messages one
time:
Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close...
Error Signature-------------------
AppName: explorer.exe-- AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156-- ModName: cmenu2.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0-- Offset: 0000247c

P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000
There is a process I don't understand:
In my "Download folder" there are 15 folders of mp3 files.
Any right click on any mp3 in those folder "wipes the desktop" of icons
and closes folders (Notepad stays open)
Drag an mp3 out of a folder to the desktop, copy it there, return the copy
to the folder, and I am now able to right click mp3s in ANY folder
within my "Download folder". Baffling!
Thanks for helping me with this Jedi--

I did a quick Google and seveal ideas came up. Anything from potential malware to disabling script debugging. I'd suggest first downloading/running something like either Spybot or Windows Defender (both free). Next, check out these two links on script debugging

Last time I ran into this it was my antivirus (McAfee btw) that had goofed things up.

Thanks Jedi Master
This gets me started.
Should I try to reinstall XT first--
maybe some aspect of explorer is corrupt?

It could be.
Personally, I'd suggest switching antiviruses. I found McAfee to be a resource pig (and Norton generally just hoses your system).
I'm running Kaspersky on all my systems now and don't have any issues. Running Vista on my rig, and my wife's desktop and laptop have XP.
