Please help... [emote|:'(] I'm new here, which I'm sure you realize. I'm about to lose my mind. Ha! My laptop kept crashing over and over (I'm on my desktop pc right now) and I kept getting the lovely blue screen, so I read where maybe the windows updates could have caused it. This is an older computer and it has XP and it worked nicely until I tried to use explorer 7.0. I went back to the previous browser and it worked fine for awhile. I realized, however, that I had service pack 2 installed. After reading that windows update (with service pack 2 could cause problems in older versions of windows xp,...) I followed directions that said to go to control panel and uninstall the updates. Well, after doing so, the system tells me that it's unable to locate winsrv. Well, this is what it says exactly: IT BOOTS like normal... shows the windows logo as usual (I get all excited thinking it's going to work... then BAM... BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH *UGH!!!*).... and this message appears in white letters .............: STOP: C0000 135 {Unable to locate component} This application has failed to start because winsrv was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. Ok, that's fine and dandy, but it will not let me go into safe mode or anything to install windows. When I try to go into safe mode, it still stops and gives me this error. It will, however, allow me to go to the DOS prompt and because I had a computer in the dark ages, I remember some DOS commands. I was able to see the dir of C: drive and all, but have no idea what to do when I get there. Is it possible for me to get a copy of this file and copy it to a cd and copy that to the hard drive (since I do have access to the CD drive) ?? I'll try anything at this point. Thank you for any help. It would be GREATLY appreciated. I feel like a big ole dummy right now! [emote|:-S][emote|:'(]

I'm @ssuming that your laptop came with a restore CD. With all of the issues you have, I'd strongly recommend doing a complete reformat/reinstal...but before doing that, create a slipstreamed copy of Windows XP and SP2. It sounds complex, but it's actually easy. You can find instructions here http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp What this does is integrate SP2 into the original WinXP CD. You'll need a blank CD and either Nero or some other burning program. From there, when you reinstall, reboot, and at the text that says "press any key to enter setup", do that. Follow the onscreen prompts. You'll get to a screen to instal WinXP on a separate partition or to delete the current one. Choose to delete the current one and then reformat and reinstall with the slipstreamed WinXP CD. After WinXP is installed, update your laptops components with the CD that has the drivers on it (If you don't have that, go to the mfgr's website on your desktop pc and download the drivers for your specific laptop). Once you reach this point, you should be ok to install the rest of WinXP's updates, including IE7. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200 and D100

Actually, my laptop didn't come with a restore CD because it was bought from EBAY. [emote|:(] I wish!t did!! I don't know if I can find one or not. It was a gift to me and it worked nicely for a very long time, so I wasn't really worried about a restore disk (something we all wish we thought about before, eh??) Anyway, I will create the slipstreamed copies you described here. Thank you SO MUCH for your help. Do you think I should try to find a restore copy from someplace? I don't know if the guy who sold it to the person who bought it for me even still exists on Ebay, as it was quite awhile back. Thanks again Jedi Master! You're awesome for answering my post! Can you provide the make/model/spec's (i.e. amount of RAM, processor speed, HD size, CD or DVD drive, etc.). Depending upon what's in it, it might be a candidate for Vista. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200 and D100

Yes, it's a Dell Latitude CPT It's a Pent. II and has a CD/DVD drive that reads only (not writable). No floppy drives. Because I can't get to windows, I can't tell you what the processor speed or amount of RAM is (I know I should know these things.. I'm learning a HUGE lesson here. If I get this back up and working, I'm going to write down everything I know about this laptop and put it in a very safe place.) Thank you, JM, for taking the time to help me! It is SO appreciated!!! A PII won't handle Vista. Only recommendation is to purchase a copy of WinXP (Home or Pro). Current copies of XP will include SP2. Also, download the drivers for your particular model from Dell and burn to a CD. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200 and D100
