Search support.microsoft.com on "event id 4" or event id5" or "error code 4", and youll find 1 article that says this is by design - you need to update your bios (usually some people will fight me on this).

i could find the article but whats the point, you need to update.

to prove it see what hal you have.

Right click my computer > manage > double click device manager > double click 'computer' on the right. If it says 'standard pc' your using apm, the older power management standard used in win95. Update that bios.

Which post are you referring to wdtm1?

For the 1st and 2nd post, the problem is bios related. If you want proof here's the microsoft article that says this is by design. At the bottom of the article is a link, go there to fully read up on the problem.

As for the "80% motherboards dont work on xp" statement, do you have any facts to back this up? In general i have seen problems with very cheap motherboards on xp. These cheap motherboards usually will work for xp, but you have to spend a lot of time trying to find out how. My computer is home built, 2 weeks before xp launched, and i have no problems at all. When xp launched there were only a couple motherboards on the HCL, however if you look at it now it's substantial. Also, motherboards usually arent tested for the HCL exclusivly. Usually a motherboard will be tested for the HCL as a replacement for a standard pc. This is one of the reasons why the motherboards on the HCL arent as numberous as other componants.
