Sorry to see noone has posted a solution to this. I am having this problem on 3 dif computers with 2 dif hrdwr configs. At boot the machines hang for 6 to 10 minutes with 100% cpu utilization and svchost.exe is the culprit. I contacted Microsoft who referred me to a hot fix that had not been released yet. Didn't work. Been roaming the internet for a solution.

I've done all the little maintenance stuff including deleting temp files. I even tried reinstalling sp2. I work for a small business (under 10) and three of our computers have this problem. It seems weird to me that this problem is not more widespread!

It turns out for my machines (3) it is Automatic Update. I turned this off and all is well, almost. When I run Microsoft Update manually the same thing happens. If you examine svchost with Process Explorer (Sysinternals) Automatic Updates tops the list of processes. The actual file for Automatic Updates is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauserv.dll. I have not found a fix for this yet but did find a solution for the boot hang problem.

Here is the fix for anyone having this problem. You may or may not have all these folders or may not be able to delete all files in the folders. That was not a problem for me. This fix came from Microsoft Article 931852. 1. Click Start, click Run, and then type net stop wuauserv. 2. On the desktop, double-click My Computer, and then delete the drive:\WuTemp folder. 3. Delete the drive:\Windows\System32\Catroot2 folder. 4. Open the drive:\Windows folder, and then rename the SoftwareDistribution folder @ssoftwareDistributionOLD. 5. Open the drive:\Windows\system32 folder, and then follow these steps: a. Rename the Wuweb.dll file as Wuweb.dll.old. b. Rename the Wuapi.dll file as Wuapi.dll.old. c. Rename the Wuauclt.exe file as Wuauclt.exe.old. d. Rename the Wuaucpl.cpl file as Wuaucpl.cpl.old. e. Rename the Wuaueng1.dll file as Wuaueng1.dll.old. f. Rename the Wuaueng.dll file as Wuaueng.dll.old. g. Rename the Wuauserv.dll file as Wuauserv.dll.old. h. Rename the Wucltui.dll file as Wucltui.dll.old. i. Rename the Wups2.dll file as Wups2.dll.old. j. Rename the Wups.dll file as Wups.dll.old. 6. Restart the computer.

New developements on an old issue. Now after further experience it turns out that Symantecs Antivirus suite is responsible for hosing Windows Automatic Update service. This does not suprise me. I have been having problems with Symantecs products since 1997 with NT 4.0. If I had my way there would not be any of Symantecs software on the computers I take care of. If Peter Norton new what Symantec was going to do with his software I'm sure he would never have sold it to them!
