What I mean is, don't upgrade over a prior version. Do a clean install. Why you might ask? Good question. Certain programs, mostly utilities such as antivirus, disk utilities, CD/DVD creation programs and the like don't always play well with new operating systems. You usually have to uninstall these programs. The problem is, oft times they leave little tidbits behind, and can still make a mess out of things. Just got an e-mail from a friend that was doing an upgrade. His system included Norton ScrewUpMy SystemWorks, an older version of Easy CD Creamator, and some other stuff. Besides taking three hours to install, it rebooted to...nothing. Now he has to do a complete reformat and all. Fortunately, he did remember to back everything up. Yes, doing a clean install is a pain in the butt...yeah...it takes a while. But trust me - having had to fix several systems where people did upgrades (and didn't bother to follow instructions), it's well worth it to do it right the first time, and avoid needless frustration. I should be receiving my copies of Vista Business and Office 2007 (from the Power Together offer that was noted on ActiveWin) in about a week. Once everything's done, I'll chronicle my experience and post it as an article here on ActiveWin. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100

As a follow-up, I did a clean install, and reinstalled all applications. The only hardware issue I ran into was with the soundcard (a Soundblaster Live Value). Creative Labs decided not to provide drivers for them, but with a little research, there is a set of hacked drivers that someone else prepared. Only one software program wouldn't install (MediaDex - a Digital @sset Management program). They have an upgrade, but are asking full price for it (nuts to that). So far, Vista runs just fine on my machine. Some programs (especially Photoshop and Bridge) seem to work better. I'm working on a full write-up article to be posted on ActiveWin. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Live Value; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100
