ReInstalling an application following System Restore (program .exe file went missing), Windows Installer is rejecting the installation file from application publisher (.exe) and requesting a .msi file. Doing a search on my computer, found NO .msi files. Is there a switch deep within XP determining what to install? HELP! And thanks in advance.

hate to say, ragulrocks! didn't work! checked the altered settings and all was disabled as per your instructions. Tried to uninstall previous disfuctioning application bits and pieces, tried installing through add/remove programs, the run line, double clicking the application install file (exe) and every time with error message ~.msi cannot be found. Honest! I'm accessing ~.exe Thanks for your offering. Any other suggestions out there?
