The solution is the same as posted (numerous times) on the thread. FYI, the thread was locked as it had gotten out of control.
First, go under Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/System. Click on the Hardware tab and then Device Manager. Scroll down to see if there is an exclamation next to any of the sound devices. If there is, right click and choose uninstall. Reboot your computer and allow WinXP to find the right driver.
If this isn't the case, some add'l info is needed. i.e. Is your computer a retail (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc) or a "custom" built?

It sounds like the soundcard is built into the motherboard. Check the mobo's website for current drivers. The second choice is to check with whomever "custom built" your system for their advice.

First, a little more information on your computer (make/model/etc.) always helps.
Second, follow these instructions - go under Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/System. Click on the Hardware tab and then Device Manager. Scroll down to see if there is an exclamation next to any of the sound devices. If there is, right click and choose uninstall. Reboot your computer and allow WinXP to find the right driver.
Let us know if this works.
