Hard lesson learned. It's not a good idea to delete programs unless you REALLY know what you're doing. To get the sound back, go to Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance (if your in Category view)/System (this will be there if you're in Cl@ssic view). Click on the Hardware tab and then Device Manager. Scroll down to Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Check to see if there's a yellow exclamation point on anything. If so, right click and choose Update Driver and allow Windows to search the internet for the right driver. If not, right click on the sound card and related drivers and choose Uninstall. Once you uninstall all related sound card drivers, reboot and let WinXP find the right drivers.
