man what bad advice!!

The win98/win98se shutdown supplement is only to fix a problem where u shutdown, and the pc restarts instead. This person is not having that problem, instead of shutting down they just get a curser. The shutdown fixes won't do jack to fix that!

What u need to do is try safe mode. To get to safe mode press F5 as the pc boots. If you can shutdown in safe mode OK then it's a software issue. However if the same thing happens in safe mode, you need a BIOS update. You'll need to contact your manufactor for that. What i really suspect is some hardware is causing the pc to do this.

i dont care what you think amigo. The proper way to troubleshoot is to start at the basics, and from the information learned to try to narrow down the issue. The wrong way to troubleshoot is to take wild stabs in the dark without any proof of a fix. Like i said, if the pc shuts down in safe mode, it's a 3rd party driver or software. Now how would a microsoft hotfix fix the issue? You're just taking a wild stab in the dark, waiting your time and this persons time.

To illustrate my point better, i once had a call where the customer had previously talked to a tech for over 2 hours. The problem was when they were online, the pc froze or soemthing. The previous tech spent 2 hours and made no progress. Customer calls me, first thing i do is a full clean boot, restart, and problem does not repro. This means something in the startup group is causing the problem. All it took was about 30 mins to narrow it down. Now you would think the customer would be happy that i fixed there issue, however they were very upset that they waisted 2 hours on the phone jumping in circles, when a simple clean boot narrowed down the problem. He even asked me if all techs are supposed to do a clean boot, it really made us look bad.

Just yesterday, someone was new and was troubleshooting internet explorer. They jumped around, and talked to a senior tech, who said to rip some registry keys and do all this stuff. I told him to do the basics first - delete the cookies, try safe mode, reset inet options to default. Turns out deleting the cookies fixed the browsing issue, and he was even embarrassed. He could have literally spent hours on the phone doing registry hacks and downloading hotfixes, which wouldn't have fixed the issue.


My point is very simply to troubleshoot you need to go in a lineary process, and do the basics like safe mode. Otherwise your wasting your time and the customers time, and you look like a fool. If you can narrow down the issue you'll resolve the issue very quickly. The difference between a great tech, like myself, and an average tech, like meandrake, is the ability to do this. If you're smart you won't be so defensive and you'll listen to me and learn how to be a better tech.
