In win98/me the registry is 2 files (well in windows me i think u have classes.cdat too):

c:\windows\system.dat
c:\windows\user.dat

(these are hidden files)

In win98/me the proper way to backup the registry is start > run > scanregw /backup

I would download a trial antivirus from antivirus.com, or do an online virus scan at http://housecall.antivirus.com

You might also want to reinstall the antivirus since some trojans/viruses disable (delete) antivirus.
