Lots of things could cause standy. I would first want to know your PC name and model, then i would search the microsoft kb and www.microsoft.com/hcl to see if there's any known issues.
Since power management issues are related to the bios, hardware, and operationing system, i would next update the bios if an update is available on your manufactor's website. THe update process is called flashing the bios. Since the bios is a read only memory chip on the motherboard stored in the cmos, the only way to update it is to overwrite the old bios and flash in a new one. Backup all your data first before you do this.
If that didnt work i would try safe mode. If it works in safe mode problem is with 3rd party driver or software. I would then use msconfig to narrow down the problem.
Also, check out event viewer (control panel/admin tools/event viewer) and search support.microsoft.com for anything you find.
In control panel you might also want to make sure your using ACPI not APM. Right click my computer, left click manage, then double click device manager. THen click on the view menu, and sort by type (i think im not in winxp now). If it says standard pc, your using apm. If it says acpi pc (i think) your using acpi. In device manager you would also want to double click on the mouse, and make sure the box is checked that says to resume...
ill post more ideas when im running winxp, this should help.

That error in event log does mean you need to flash the bios. My bios is dated 6/08/01, and i need a update, so date doesnt matter. Whats happening is the bios is trying to use memory space outside of what it can use, winxp is so smart it blocks this. Theres a kb article that says this if u want, but believe me you do need a bios update, even if it doesnt fix this problem.

i dont help people flash the bios, when you download the flash update it should come with a readme to follow. otherwise call your pc manu for help doing this, you did after all pay good $$$ for the pc, they should be able to walk you through this.
