meandrake, madmax is totally correct. He/she said windows xp requires 1.5 gigs, this is true. On a clean installation you need 1.5 gigs free, on an upgrade you need 900 megs free. Note though that if you install on a fat partition it might be slightly more, the numbers are for ntfs!
madmax also said the pagefile is 1.5x memory, again this is totally correct. By default, the swap file will be 1.5x your memory. I have 512 MB ram, so my swap file is 768 MB. If you'll check yours youll see the same thing. The reason this is so in WINDOWS XP (not win9x) is because when you get a blue screen, the MEMORY is saved to the HARD DRIVE. Obviously if you have 512 MB ram, the dump is gonna take more hard drive space than 512 MB Ram.
Some very important things to remember about swap files:
- if your swap file is too small, xp will auto make it bigger no matter what size you have. So if you have 64 MB of ram, and a 20 meg static swap file, and xp needs 100 megs, itll increase the swap file to 36 megs. If your swap file is too small, itll mean a more fragmented drive, and a slower pc. If your swap file is too small, the computer will be very slow as it increases the swap file.
- if your swap file is less than your total ram, you cannot dump a blue screen to a file for debugging. The only way to dump a blue screen is to have the swap file 1 meg more than your total ram for a minidump.
- some websites say a static swap file is smart, in fact it is not. Back in windows 3.1, there was a static and dynamic swap file. This resulted in horrible memory management since the temp file fragmented the drive. In win95 and higher, microsoft used a much smart swap file that is dynamically changed. The reason it's better is because even though my swap file may be 768 megs, it may be only be used for 20 megs. So your swap file is always the same size, but its dynamically changed as your needs increase. This results in minimul fragmentation and great performance. If anyone tells you a static swap file is better, there a fool and you should ignore them. Let windows manage itself!
I am so sick of people screwing up there computer. Unless you know what you are doing, don't mess with settings. UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING, DO NOT TOUCH THE SWAP FILE. I am so sick of people playing with settings, then wondering why they get blue screens - if you leave windows alone your pc will probably work great.
Lastly, a swap file is a pagefile, its like comparing an apple to an orange. Im sure you were just showing off how much you know, but you know nothing. Do some research, both of you. Your both talking out of your asses.

You are talking out of your ass. If you dont know how to resolve something, dont post bullshit. There are many times when i think i might know the resolution, but i dont post because i dont want to give inaccurate information. If you were to look at all my posts, i bet you wouldnt find anything incorrect. Giving someone wrong information is very dangerous, it could screw up there computer worse. Imagine going to a doctor and having someone that "sorta knows what there doing" operate on you, bad things might happen.
There's a big difference between being helpful and being right.
