Never happened in winme, always happened in xp?

Whats happening is something is hooking into your shell causing it to crash. The shell is explorer and internal explorer. I would first look at event viewer, just go to start, run, type: eventvwr.msc /s. Once in event viewer, click on application. On right side, double click on any event ID 1001, i believe. THese should be fault buckets. Itll say something like application blah.exe ver 6.0.26000 in module blah.dll ver 6.0.2600 in faultaddress 0x800800 at..., write all this info down for any errors in event viewer. You should see errors like this:

application iexplore.exe ver 6.0.2600 in module blah.dll ver x.x.x. in faultaddress 0x00000

Write all this down. Search support.microsoft.com for any modules it finds, or use google to find out what application this is. So if it says module _mtx.exe search both those sites for it.

Known programs that have caused this are norton products, iomega, bonzia buddy, anything 3rd party.

You might want to try this in safe mode. Just restart the prc and press f8, then choose safe mode, click YES to the message you get. Reproduce the problem, if it happens in safe mode and previous toubleshooting hasnt worked, you need to reinstall windows xp.

To reinstall boot from xp cd, press any key when prompted, press enter to do a new installation, press f8, it should find your current windows, then press r for repair. This will only reinstall the OS.

Any questions just reply back

all the errors say module unknown? what about the faultaddress? Try to reproduce the problem as much as you can, and look for any modules in event viewer. If you find any modules search support.microsoft.com or help and support, for the module to see what program is associated with it, then uninstall the program. Also search support.microsoft.com for what the faultaddress says. So if it says 0x12345678, search that site for 0x12345678, or 12345678.

I would recommend an in place repair,

-gosh
