To all who are having the same problem: As I read through this post, no where did I see any specific details about anyone's computer - i.e. make (Dell, Gateway, etc), model, or anything specific. Without specific information about your hardware, it's impossible to even getting close to providing a solution. If your computer is a "custom built" (i.e. built by a friend, local shop, etc), you will need to provide specific details (i.e. motherboard make, model, etc, or soundcard make, model, etc). ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100

I wish this thread would die... Is your computer a "custom built" one (i.e. built by a computer shop or purchased at a computer show) or a retail computer (Gateway, Dell, HP, Compuke, e-machines). Do you have Service Pack 2 installed? Your post seems very familiar. Did you post the same question elsewhere before? ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100

Since you have SP 2, this should work. 1. Go to Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/System. 2. Click on the Hardware tab, then Device Manager 3. There is a good chance that there will be an ! next to the audio devices that aren't working. If so, and even if they're not, right-click on it and choose Uninstall. 4. Either reboot or click on the icon that has the pop-up "Scan for Hardware Changes" 5. The computer should locate the sound card hardware. If you get a pop-up asking about going to the internet to locate drivers, choose this option. Let Windows find the best driver. Hopefully the above should work. And no, not EVERYBODY has a similar problem. The problem is not having the proper drivers or knowing where to get them and how to install them. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100

yakusa and JBucknoff - there's a common problem with your posts. YOU HAVEN'T PROVIDED ANY DETAILS ABOUT YOUR COMPUTER HARDWARE AND ESPECIALLY THE SOUNDCARD! It would help if you could tell us what type of soundcard it is. Also, it may not be a Microsoft bug. It may be a problem with the soundcard driver that were provided to microsoft. And yes...Microsoft did provide a detailed listing of potential problem programs and such with SP2 (it's on their website) ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100

yakuza - Check your computer mfgr's website. The serial number of your motherboard doesn't help much. I Googled Targa, and these appear to be mfgred in England. Andrewz15 - check Intel's site for an updated driver. Since yours is an intel board (thanks for providing the detailed info), there is probably a driver there. All - as previously posted, if you have SP2 installed, by going into Device Manager, you can have Windows XP search for the best driver. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesnt. The first place to look for updated drivers is your computer mfgr's website (i.e. Dell, Gateway, Compuke, HP, Sony, etc). If you have a "custom built" system, and the soundcard is built into the motherboard, check the motherboard mfgr's web site. If you have a separate soundcard, you're gonna have to open up the computer (make sure that it's unplugged) and look at the actual card. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100

There's a commonality amonst all these threads - "I reinstalled windows and I can't get my soundcard to work". The commonality is "I either didn't download the soundcard driver, don't know HOW to download it, or can't find my restore disc". The point - before you decide to reformat your computer, make sure you have EVERYTHING. All drivers, programs, data backups, etc. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS, Nikon D2Hs and D100

leocar, namajnag, dannylatics Have ANY of you read through this thread? Here's several hints on how to find the right drivers: 1. Go to the computer mfgr's website 2. If you don't want to do that, make sure that you have WinXP SP2 installed and do the following: Go to Control Panel/Performance & Maintenance/System. Click on the Hardware tab and go to Device Manager. Right click on the device that has an ! next to it and choose to update the driver. Allow WinXP to search the net in case it wasn't installed with SP2. 3. Don't want to do that? Get a Mac ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D2Hs and D100

john7435 - Did YOU bother to read through the thread? No? Based on the above, I'd bet yours is a "custom" built system. Best suggestion: 1. Go the the motherboard mfgrs site and check for an updated driver 2. If that doesn't work, read my post above on alternative ways to find the driver 3. If that doesn't work, get a Mac If you get the idea that I'm being scarcastic, I am. After the countless number of posts here, along with VIABLE solutions, it amazes me that the only posts here are "me too" and no one bothers to read through the entire thread to find a solution. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D2Hs and D100

Try this. Go to Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/System. Click on the Hardware tab and then Device Manager. Choose uninstall for the audio controller. Then...reboot. Let WinXP search for the best driver. If you get a message to search the internet, choose yes. 95%+ of the time, it will find the correct driver, download and install it. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D2Hs and D100

First, make sure that you've installed all of the motherboard chipset drivers. FYI, motherboards with VIA chipsets are known to be a pain in the @ss with Win2000/WinXP (Via's drivers are crap). Next, per my previous suggestions, after you've installed the chipset drivers, do what I wrote on the 2/8/06 post. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 512mb RAM, ATi Radeon 8500; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D2Hs and D100
