You know there are bigger problems in life than using set program defaults in xp. People are dieing of hunger and here you are complaining about a stupid feature no one cares about. Keep things in perspective.
As far as the set programs and defaults, it will take awhile for 3rd parties to update there programs to use this feature. You said you cannot use media player? Just go to start > run > wmplayer.exe and click ok. WHen it opens it should prompt you if you want to use it as the default player say yes. You can also unhide it in add/remove programs.
Getting your information from cnet is not a good idea. Do you believe everything you see on tv or the web? Instead of bashing sp1 why don't you do some research on it instead of being a sheap and believing whatever you're told.
