It seems to me that you should have your own development server.

Production servers shouldn't be touched, except at scheduled times when there would be little usage.

I work for a larger company and we have development and then pre-production environments. The pre-prod is used to test the promotion of new changes to make sure they work not just functionally but also from an installation perspective before pulling the trigger on the live site.

You should also make full backups before doing any updates to production, especially the database. This may be nothing more than taking a snapshot to a harddrive somewhere, just in case.
